There's no shortage of reasons to be annoyed by Brett Favre(notes), but you have to appreciate his preemptive excuse-making candor: "I probably don't move around as well I used to. I don't think I trust my legs as much as I used to and I think in all honesty I'm not physically as capable as I once was." [Access Vikings]
It seems that Terrell Owens(notes) might like a few more opportunities. Go figure. "Pressed further on why the Pats were able to defend the outside so well, Owens said: 'As I said earlier, there were some opportunities that we missed, and
those are some of the things you're talking about. It's always a work in progress, and Trent [Edwards] has to better assess what he's seeing out there and take some shots down the field.'"
TO added, "by no means was that the reason that we lost the game," because, well…that was clearly not why the Bills lost that game. [Buffalo News]
Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez(notes) "could return after the team's bye week in mid-October," according to Mike Chappell. Gonzalez is dealing with a strained PCL, but he apparently will not require surgery. And it's not like the Colts have ever covered up a surgical procedure, so you can take that report to the bank. [Indianapolis Star]
If you're looking for LaDainian Tomlinson's(notes) foot, check the boot on his leg: "Tomlinson did not practice Wednesday and was wearing a protective boot on his right ankle. He was neither optimistic nor pessimistic regarding his chances of playing Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. He was realistic. 'It's not anything that is going to keep me out for a long time,' he said.' We'll just wait and see how it plays out.'" The Week 2 matchup with Baltimore is rough, so don't expect to see Darren Sproles(notes) too high in Friday's position rankings. [San Diego Union-Tribune]
Seattle linebacker Leroy Hill(notes) "has a pretty significant groin injury" according to coach Jim Mora, and it may require surgery. Hill won't return until November 1 at the earliest. Left tackle Walter Jones(notes) did not participate in the team portion of practice on Wednesday; his status for Week 2 is obviously in doubt. [The Seattle Times]
This is relatively good news for those of us who own Dwayne Bowe(notes), and who are somewhat frightened by Oakland corner Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) in Week 2: "We're going to go at him," said the third-year receiver. Bowe had four receptions for 40 yards and a TD in Week 1 versus Baltimore. [Arrowhead Pride]
Following the draft in The Roto Arcade Invitational™, million_dollar_sleeper discussed rosters and strategy with Antonio D'Arcangelis, a distinguished professor of postmodern IDPs over at RotoExperts. [MDS Fantasy]
Another study on fourth downs has been completed, with results that won't surprise anyone who's seen other studies on fourth downs. From Brian Burke: "There’s an arbitrage opportunity in the N.F.L. right now. The first
coach who takes advantage of a more aggressive 4th-down doctrine could
win a whole lot of games, and N.F.L. strategy could get a whole lot
more interesting." [The Fifth Down]
Nando Di Fino takes a look at the correlation between Week 1 performance and a player's final numbers, using five years of data. It's short, but interesting. Worth a read. "Wide receiver performance (.379) and tight end performance (.215) in Week 1 seem far less connected to overall production." [Wall Street Journal]
